If it hasn’t been made evident by now, we love people here at AAT! We love hearing about their stories and passions for our community, but we also love hearing about what our fellow locals do and why they do it! For example, we have some wonderful neighbors who own/manager some fantastic local businesses and serve our town tremendously by doing so! This fact is why AAT has partnered up with our good friends at B3 Glass, to bring you all “Small Business Fridays!” Each week, we’ll feature a different, local small business and talk with its owner and hear about their journey, their business in general, as well as their heart for their customers and our city!
This week, we’re joined by the owner of Paradise Quality Cleaning, Marisol Jacobo. This Elko-born-and-raised native is someone with not only a real entrepreneurial drive but also has a genuine heart for the Hispanic community in our area, particularly when it comes to representation and inclusion. For example, one of the biggest reasons why we’re spotlighting her here at AAT today is because she reached out and reminded us how many great Hispanic individuals we have in our town and discussed ideas of how to get them featured! She’s one-hundred percent correct! A nice chunk of our city’s demographic is made up of our Hispanic neighbors, so we’re excited to have Marisol joining us this week and help us bring that representation!
Esta semana, nos acompaña la propietaria de Paradise Quality Cleaning, Marisol Jacobo. Es nacida y criada en Elko y es alguien que no solo tiene un verdadero impulso empresarial, sino que también tiene un corazón genuino por la comunidad hispana en nuestra área, particularmente cuando se trata de representación e inclusión. Por ejemplo, una de las principales razones por las que la estamos enfocando aquí en AAT hoy es porque ella nos comento y nos recordó cuántas personas hispanas excelentes tenemos en nuestra ciudad y discutió ideas sobre cómo hacer que nos enfoquemos en ellas. Ella esta cien por ciento correcta! Una buena parte del grupo demográfico de nuestra ciudad está compuesta por nuestros vecinos hispanos, ¡así que estamos emocionados de que Marisol se una a nosotros esta semana y nos ayude a traer esa representación!
Thank you so much for joining us this week, Marisol! Let’s start our conversation out at the beginning. Please describe the road you had to take to get where you are today.

“I had to go through a lot of trials to become the person God is creating me to be, although I know He’s not done with me yet. I still have a lot to learn. I started motherhood at a young age, then my parents were deported back to Mexico after living in the US for about twenty-five years. That’s been probably the biggest trail as it’s been tough having our family separated. I had to go through many things that would shape me and allow me to be who I am today, but the process has been enlightening, it grew my faith. There’s always good that comes from setbacks or difficult times.”
“Tuve que pasar por muchas pruebas para convertirme en la persona que Dios me creó para ser, aunque se que todavia no ah terminado conmigo y tengo mucho que aprender. Me converti en madre a una endad muy joven y despues mis padres fueron deportados a México después de vivir en los Estados Unidos durante unos veinticinco años. Eso ha sido la prueba mas grante porque ha sido tan dificil tener a nuestra familia separada. tuve que pasar por muchas cosas que me han hecho y me permitirían ser quien soy hoy pero el proceso ha sido tan iluminante, me iso crecer mi fe. Siempre hay algo bueno que viene de tiempos dificiles.
As someone who has called Elko home for all of their life, can you please describe your time living, working, and raising children in our area?
Como alguien que ha llamado a Elko su hogar durante toda su vida, ¿puede describir su tiempo viviendo, trabajando y criando niños en nuestra área?
“It’s been nice having a small-knit community because everyone watches out for each other. The majority of the people here that I’ve interacted with at work or in the community are just genuinely caring people. For example, my dad got sick was a cancerous brain tumor a couple years after being deported. A lot of people here in Elko showed a lot of support when they found out because a lot of people knew him. The town put together a couple of fundraisers for him—a huge dinner and then a rodeo where all the proceeds went to him.”
“Ha sido agradable tener una comunidad unida porque todos se cuidan unos a otros. La mayoria de la gente con que eh convivido en el trabajo en la comunidad son personas que te quieren genuamente. Un ejemplo cuando mi padre se enfermó de un tumor cerebral canceroso un par de años después de ser deportado. Mucha gente aquí en Elko mostraron mucho apoyo cuando se enteraron porque mucha gente lo conocía. El pueblo organizó un par de eventos para recaudar fondos para él, una gran cena y luego un rodeo donde todo lo recaudado fue para él. So Elko ha sido un pueblo que nos ha brindado mucho Apollo tanto a mi como para mis hijas en todos aspectos”
Let’s further discuss the topic of Hispanic culture and representation in Elko. This is a subject that is very important to you. How would you best describe Elko’s Hispanic community, and what has been one of your most significant observations about it over the years?
Analicemos más el tema de la cultura hispana y la representación en Elko. Este es un tema que es muy importante para ti. ¿Cómo describirías mejor a la comunidad hispana de Elko y cuál ha sido una de tus observaciones más significativas al respecto a lo largo de los años?
“The Hispanic culture here is a lot like the community of Elko in general. The people are very supportive and caring of each other. Most of us know one another because many of the Hispanic population comes from the same areas of Mexico. But it’s nice to see bits and pieces of our culture into the community through the folkloric dancing events and even the Cinco de Mayo celebration.
“Elko’s Hispanic population makes a big percentage of the community’s overall population, but there can still be a language barrier for people sometimes. I saw it a lot growing up. I had to translate at all my parents’ appointments; I remember trying to even work on translating when I was in kindergarten, while I was still learning English. I had to learn quick, or my family wouldn’t get tended to in some places. I feel like there are more bilingual professionals now, we still lack in some areas, but we’re definitely diversifying more and more, over the years.”
“La cultura hispana aquí es muy parecida a la comunidad de Elko en general. Las personas se apoyan mutuamente. Nos conocemos unos a otros porque mucha de la población Hispana viene de las mismas areas de Mexico. Pero es bueno poder ver partes de nuestra cultura a la comunidad a través de eventos folclóricos de baile e incluso la celebración del Cinco de Mayo.
“La población hispana de Elko representa un gran porcentaje de la población general de la comunidad, pero a veces puede haber una barrera del idioma para las personas. Lo vi crecer mucho. Tuve que traducir en todas las citas de mis padres; recuerdo haber intentado incluso trabajé en la traducción cuando estaba en el Kinder, y pues tratando de aprender inglés. Tuve que aprenderlo rapido, o mi familia no sería atendida en algunos lugares. Siento que ahora hay más profesionales bilingües, pero todavía nos faltan algunos áreas, pero definitivamente nos estamos diversificando cada vez más, a lo largo de los años”.
Now, you don’t only strive to be a voice for the local Hispanic population; you also have a passion for being an entrepreneur and working very hard for yourself and your family. From where did that business owner drive in you come?
Ahora, no solo se esfuerza por ser una voz para la población hispana local; También le apasiona ser emprendedor y trabajar muy duro para usted y su familia. ¿De dónde vino el dueño de ese negocio?
“Right before she was taken back to Mexico, we were on the road for my mom to open a restaurant. So, seeing the humble beginnings of my parents and all that they had to sacrifice to bring us to a country with so many opportunities, it’s become a big goal of mine to achieve a lot. I don’t want their sacrifices to go wasted. We have an almost unlimited opportunity here, as to have seen what people have down in Mexico whenever I visit my mom. Living here is a dream for many people.
“I want to continue to grow my cleaning business so that one day I can employ people like my parents. I want to bless hard-working people and provide them with a positive working environment. I grew up seeing the other side of that because I would go to work sometimes with my mom when I was young, and I saw so much discrimination that many people may not think exists anymore.”
“Justo antes de que la llevaran de regreso a México, estábamos en el camino para que mi madre abriera un restaurante. Entonces, viendo los humildes comienzos de mis padres y todo lo que tuvieron que sacrificar para llevarnos a un país con tantas oportunidades, se ha convertido en un gran objetivo mío lograr mucho. No quiero que se desperdicien sus sacrificios. Tenemos una oportunidad casi ilimitada aquí, como haber visto lo que la gente tiene en México cada vez que visito a mi madre. Vivir aquí es Un sueño para mucha gente.
“Quiero seguir haciendo crecer mi negocio de limpieza para que algún día pueda emplear a personas como mi madre. Quiero bendecir a las personas que trabajan duro y proporcionarles un ambiente de trabajo positivo. Crecí viendo el otro lado de eso porque yo a veces iba a trabajar con mi madre cuando era joven, y vi tanta discriminación que muchas personas pueden pensar que ya no existe “.
Excellent. Thank you so much for sharing some real truth with us today. Let’s wrap things up with this last question. A young woman, who reminds you a lot of yourself, asks you to share any bits of wisdom you’ve picked up living here over the years. What would you say to her?
Excelente. Muchas gracias por compartir una verdad real con nosotros hoy. Terminemos las cosas con esta última pregunta. Una joven, que te recuerda mucho a ti mismo, te pide que compartas cualquier parte de sabiduría que hayas aprendido viviendo aquí a lo largo de los años. ¿Qué le dirías a ella?
“First, I would ask to pray with her. Then, I would tell her that you will always find loving and supportive people in this community that will help you with anything you need, just reach out. Enjoy your journey, as it’s unique, as you are. Have faith in the plan that God has for you because his plans are always greater and so much better than ours and what we envision our life to be.
“Primero, pediría orar con ella. Luego, le diría que ella siempre va encontrar gente amorosa que la apolle en lo que sea, solo tiene que dejarles saber. Disfruta tu viaje en esta vida porque es unico, como tu lo eres. Ten fe en el plan que Dios tiene para ti porque son mucho mejores de lo que pensamos nosotros y lo que envisionamos para nosotros “.
